About SiteLine Planner

SiteLine Planner is a suite of three site planning apps — SiteLine RF for ham radio antenna planning, SiteLine Dish for satellite dish pointing, and SiteLine Solar for solar panel placement. All three apps share the same terrain engine, built on USGS elevation data, and run without accounts, ads, or tracking.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I enter my location?
You have three options:
  1. Type your latitude and longitude directly into the location fields (decimal degrees, e.g. 40.4406, -79.9959).
  2. Use the address lookup — type a street address, city, or place name and pick the matching result.
  3. Tap "Use My Location" to grab your current GPS position. The app will request location permission the first time; we use foreground-only permission and never track in the background.
You can mix and match — for example, enter your home QTH manually and use address lookup for the repeater.
Why is terrain data not loading?
SiteLine Planner pulls elevation data from the USGS Elevation Point Query Service in real time, so it requires an active internet connection. If terrain isn't loading:
  • Confirm your device has a working internet connection.
  • Try again in a moment — the USGS service is occasionally rate-limited or briefly down for maintenance.
  • Verify your coordinates fall within the United States; coverage outside the US is limited (see below).
If the issue persists for more than a few minutes, please email us with the coordinates you tried.
How accurate is the terrain data?
SiteLine Planner uses the USGS 1/3 arc-second National Elevation Dataset, which corresponds to roughly 10-meter horizontal resolution across the contiguous United States. Vertical accuracy is generally on the order of a few meters in open terrain. This is the same dataset used by surveyors and federal agencies, and it is far more accurate than the SRTM data that powers many free mapping tools.

That said, the dataset describes bare earth — it does not include buildings, trees, or other structures. For very short paths, treat the results as a starting point and verify on-site.
Can I use this outside the US?
The coordinate entry, mapping, and azimuth/elevation math all work globally. However, the high-resolution terrain data we use is provided by USGS and only covers the United States and its territories. Outside the US you can still use the apps to compute pointing angles and distances, but terrain-based features (line-of-sight, profiles, shading from terrain) will not return useful results.

We are evaluating global elevation sources for a future release. If this matters to you, let us know — it helps us prioritize.
How do I report a bug?
Please email support@sitelineplanner.com. To help us reproduce the issue quickly, include:
  • Which app you're using (SiteLine RF, Dish, or Solar) and the version number.
  • Your device and OS (e.g. "iPhone 15, iOS 18.2" or "Pixel 8, Android 15").
  • The coordinates or addresses that triggered the issue.
  • A short description of what you expected vs. what happened. Screenshots help.
We're a small team and we read every message.
